NTU CN Yang Scholars Programme Students Visit the ISSP

From May 18 to 19, a group of 13 undergraduate students from the CN Yang Scholars Programme at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, visited the Institute for Solid State Physics (ISSP) for research-oriented activities and campus tours. The CN Yang Scholars Programme is a prestigious scholarship programme for outstanding students in science, engineering, and computing, designed to nurture future leaders through interdisciplinary learning, early research exposure, and international experiences. This visit was organized as part of the programme to provide students with first-hand exposure to the research activities and environment at ISSP, with a view toward future international research engagement.

On the first day, following greetings and self-introductions by both sides, the visiting students toured the Kashiwa Campus to learn about its research environment and distinctive facilities. During lunch, a casual discussion session was held with faculty members and students from the condensed matter theory division, fostering lively exchanges on research topics and student life. In the afternoon, research presentations were given by Prof. Takashi Oka and Prof. Minoru Yamashita, who introduced recent research developments and approaches in their respective fields. This was followed by a laboratory tour of the Yamashita Group, where the students gained deeper insight into experimental facilities and ongoing research activities.

On the second day (May 19), research presentations were delivered by Prof. Masayuki Hashisaka, Prof. Toshiya Ideue, Prof. Takeshi Kondo, and Prof. Atsuhiko Miyata. These talks highlighted the diverse research approaches in solid state physics and the distinctive features of research at ISSP, and prompted many active questions from the visiting students. At lunchtime, a luncheon seminar focusing on university education and student life was held, with participation from Prof. Marie D’Angelo of the Global Hub for Quantum Spintronics, as well as internship students from France. Short presentations by students from Japan, Singapore, and France provided an opportunity for cross-cultural interaction and engaging discussion. In the afternoon, laboratory tours of the Hashisaka and Ideue Groups, followed by the Kondo and Miyata Groups, were conducted, allowing the students to visit multiple laboratories and further deepen their understanding of the research framework at ISSP.
