Bei Sun(M2, Miyata Group)has received the First Prize Poster Award at Magneto-Optics in Quantum Light and Matter 2025

Master’s student Bei Sun (Miyata Group) has received the First Prize Poster Award from Quantum Design and the National Physical Laboratory (NPL). The prize is awarded to outstanding poster presentations by early-career researchers and students in the field of magneto-optics and quantum materials.

The award poster, entitled “Giant Magneto-Optical Response in LiNiPO4 under Pulsed High Magnetic Fields”, reports a systematic study of magneto-optical effects in the magnetoelectric antiferromagnet LiNiPO4 under pulsed high magnetic fields up to 52 T.

In this work, Sun identified a giant hot magnon sideband response associated with magnetic structure, revealing a direct coupling between magnetic order and optical selection rules in LiNiPO4. In addition, a nonreciprocal switching of optical transitions is observed in the visible range above 40 T. These findings demonstrate that high magnetic fields can be used to manipulate the magnetic structure of magnetoelectric materials and open new pathways for controlling optical functionalities in quantum magnets.

This achievement and Sun’s clear presentation were highly evaluated by the selection committee, leading to the conferment of the First Prize Poster Award.
