Liu Zheyuan, a doctoral student in Masuda Group, received the Student Presentation Award of the Physical Society of Japan, 79th annual meeting, 2024 for his work on “Chiral-Split Magnon in Altermagnetic MnTe”. The symposium was held from September 16 to 19 at the Hokkaido University.
Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on MnTe reveal altermagnetism, a novel fundamental magnetism, in a bulk system.Altermagnets offer an alternative to ferromagnets for spin current generation, and are regarded as fascinating platforms for exploring unconventional superconductivity. In the experiments, a giant splitting of altermagnetic magnon bands was clearly observed and described by a model with non-relativistic exchange interactions. These findings give the first observation of altermagnetism from the perspective of spin excitation, and highlight the exchange origin of altermagnetism. This work promise to stimulate further exploration in this emerging field and offer valuable insights for potential applications in spintronics and beyond.
