The microscopic basis for understanding the diversity of properties of matter is the law of quantum mechanics, which is the fundamental law of physics governing the motion of electrons and nuclei. The key aspect producing the remarkable complexity from this simple law of physics is the effect of the interaction among an astronomical number of particles on the order of 1023. To understand novel phenomena, a condensedmatter theorist formulates a theoretical model for an interacting many-body system that captures the essential physics of the problem. To conduct a theoretical study on such a model, various approaches developed in theoretical physics are employed: the analytic methods of mathematical physics, field-theoretic methods, and numerical methods including first-principles calculations based on density functional theory and quantum Monte Carlo simulations.
