さまざまな性質をしめす物質も、その構造の内部に入り 原子レベルまで分け入って考えると量子力学という普遍 的な物理法則によって支配されている。単純な物理法則 から多様な現象が生じる鍵は1023個という天文学的な 数の基本粒子がお互いに相互作用をしていることにあ る。物性理論の研究者は各人のアイディアに導かれて、理 論的枠組みやモデルを構成し、その性質を研究すること によってこれまで未知と考えられてきた現象の理解と新 しい現象の予言が可能となることを目指している。理論 研究を遂行するに当たっては、数理物理学や場の量子論 などの解析的手法や、密度汎関数理論に基づく第一原理 計算や量子モンテカルロシミュレーションなどの計算物 理的手法などが駆使されている。
The microscopic basis for understanding the diversity of properties of matter is the law of quantum mechanics, which is the fundamental law of physics governing the motion of electrons and nuclei. The key aspect producing the remarkable complexity from this simple law of physics is the effect of the interaction among an astronomical number of particles on the order of 1023. To understand novel phenomena, a condensedmatter theorist formulates a theoretical model for an interacting many-body system that captures the essential physics of the problem. To conduct a theoretical study on such a model, various approaches developed in theoretical physics are employed: the analytic methods of mathematical physics, field-theoretic methods, and numerical methods including first-principles calculations based on density functional theory and quantum Monte Carlo simulations.
