Introduction to the Density-Matrix Renormalization Group

A brief review is given on various quantum Monte Carlo methods and their relationships. Starting from the Swendsen-Wang algorithm for the Ising model, I discuss the loop algorithm as a natural extention of the SW algorithm to quantum systems. Also discussed is the relationship of the loop algorithm to a few other important algorithms, such as the stochastic-series-expantion method and the worm algorithm. I will also mention possible further generalizations and important open problems.
