Electromagnetic Measurements Section

The Electromagnetic Measurements Laboratory offers various facilities for measurements of electric and magnetic properties of materials. The followings are types of experiments currently supported in this Laboratory: electrical resistivity, magnetoresistance and Hall effect, magnetization, magneto-quantum oscillatory phenomena, a.c. susceptibility, magnetic torque.

What's new, MPMS
Present status
  • Now, reparing is completed.
  • The liq-He consuming becomes proper.
  • The temperature controller works nicely.

Future prospects
  • MPMS-XL-A is now open for joint research programs.
  • MPMS-XL-B will be stopped after middle of October, however
  • MPMS-XL-B is now open for researchers in ISSP. If you can take
  • a cost for liq-He, you can use MPMS-XL-B.

Usage Instruction for MPMS-XL-A

before your measurement
  • fill up the log-note.
  • run "log MPMS". the file name must be noted in the log note. (Utilities/Log MPMS Data/, fill and check the required parameters, log-file name, sampling rate (~100 sec), temperature, field etc.. in the dialog box, and push the "START" button)
  • write any anomalous thing you feel.
in your measurement
  • keep the He-level of MPMS above 50% when you set H >1 T.
  • check the liq-N2 in the outer jacket of MPMS. if there is no liq-N2, please refill it (be sure the exhaust valve sequence when you do liq-N2 filling).
  • keep the amount of liq-He in the vessel more than 10 liter.
  • return the vessel to the cryogenics service laboratry and/or contact to me as soon as possible when the residual liq-He is less than 10 litler.
after your measurement
  • set H =0 Oe.
  • finish the "log MPMS".
  • turn the MPMS standby mode for economical consuming of liq-He (Instrument/Standby}, carefully see the dialog box and push "OK" only one time).
  • convert MPMS to the default setting (DC-setting).
  • do not leave your samples.
  • clean up the desk and the around it to make these more clear than that before you use.

before your liq-N2 transfer to MPMS
  • open the valve, to keep the oxygen in the room.
after the transfer
  • close the valve (must!!), to prevent high humidity atomospher out of the room from comming into MPMS.
