Welcome to 4G GPTAS, a general-purpose triple-axis neutron spectrometer of [[ISSP|http://www.issp.u-tokyo.ac.jp]], [[the University of Tokyo|http://www.u-tokyo.ac.jp]], installed at the research reactor ~JRR-3, Tokai, Japan. The [[GPTAS]] is an indispensable tool for investigation of structural and magnetic aspects of condensed matters, such as strongly-correlated-electron systems, ferroelectrics, frustrated magnets, quantum spin systems, quasicrystals, liquids, and so on. With the wide energy and Q ranges, various selections of resolution functions, and well-designed sample-environment suite, GPTAS provides versatile research opportunities for the neutron scattering community. The [[GPTAS]] is maintained by [[Taku J. Sato|http://sato.issp.u-tokyo.ac.jp/sato]] and his group. If you wish to see the activity of the Sato group, visit [[their webpage|http://sato.issp.u-tokyo.ac.jp]].

*2008/09/18: BeamtimeSchedule is updated.
*2008/09/19: Again, the new monochromator becomes malfunctioning... #3 cycle will go with the old monochromator. However, I assign a lot of monochromator-adjustment beamtime...
*2008/08/25: BeamtimeSchedule is updated.
*2008/08/25: New monochromator installation failed!!! Again, we need open up the monochromator shield on the reactor shutdown period between #2 and #3 cycles. Again, the commissioning task is necessary at the first 4 days of the #3 cycle. But, we found that the new monochromator has very nice reflectivity, and wider mosaic, so if you do not need the energy resolution, the new monochromator will give larger flux than the existing one. Of course, the existing one will remain, and thus you can choose one of them.
*2008/06/17: BeamtimeSchedule for #1-#3 cycles (2008) is fixed (with some open slots). Please start your document work if your beamtime is allocated.

The virtues of thermal neutron beam obtained at the reactor face are the very wide divergence, and high total flux due to the huge water moderator size. To utilize these virtues, we may relax the Q-resolution by using the double (vertical and horizontal) focusing at the monochromator as well as the analyzer. The 4G GPTAS is now under renovation to introduce such focusing technique. We expect the 10 or 20 times higher counting rate when the full-focusing is properly implemented!
The present status of the renovation may be summarized as follows:
* Install doubly (vertical and horizontal) focusing analyzer with diverging collimators.
** The design of the doubly focusing analyzer is finished
** Horizontally, the almost perfect Johansson geometry will be realized with very thin backing plate to reduce background originating from the incoherent scattering of the backing plate.
** Vertical focusing is fixed to 14.7meV.
** Each vertical blades will be stepping-motor controlled, so that various configuration (such as asymmetric miscut geometry) may be tried.
** The analyzer drawing (tentative, close to final) may be found at [[4G doubly-focusing analyzer|4G-DFA.pdf]].
** Installation of the analyzer has finished in the November, 2007.
** We recorded about 6 times higher counting rate for a small (phi 6.5mm) vanadium standard sample using the focusing analyzer!
<html>
<img src="figs/fig8b.jpg" width="400" >
</html>
** Even with the large (phi 20mm) vanadium standard, we recorded about 2.5 times higher counting rate using the focusing analyzer!
<html>
<img src="figs/fig8d.jpg" width="400">
</html>
** If you are interested in the details of the focusing analyzer, click the [[ISSP-NSL internal report|pdfs/exprep-4GDFA.pdf]].
* Install doubly focusing monochromator with diverging collimators.
** The design of the doubly focusing monochromator has finished.
** The key issue is how to reduce the incoherent background from the backing materials; we decided to install BN backing plates to the PG crystals.
** At the same time, the Johansson geometry should be realized as much as possible; we decided to enable asymmetric focusing condition in addition to the symmetric one.
** The installation is currently scheduled at the mid-2008, if budget allows.
Sample environment schedule may be checked in the following webpage:

*Note: you have to reserve the sample environment equipments yourself.
